• It’s important to protect high-integrity forests because they provide ecosystem services for the long-term viability of cocoa production.
• NGOs bring expertise in biodiversity conservation, strong links with communities and governments, and are well placed to facilitate action to address deforestation across the wider landscape.
• We need a Forest First Approach that prioritizes action towards those forest frontiers where commodity production intersects with forests at the highest risk of deforestation.
• Learning from the Cross River National Park in Nigeria: Cross River is the largest track and one of the most biologically diverse remaining primary rainforests in Nigeria. It provides critical habitat for Cross River Gorillas, chimpanzees, and elephants. On the other hand, cocoa is expanding, putting increased pressure on forested areas. With EU funding, WCS is working collaboratively towards a deforestation-free landscape in partnership with Satelligence, companies, government, and other stakeholders.
