Working with IUCN

Created in 1948, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is the world’s largest environmental network with 1,400 Member organisations. Through their affiliation with IUCN, Member organisations are part of a democratic process voting resolutions which drive the global conservation agenda.

WCS has been a member of IUCN since 1949 and actively engages with the IUCN Species Survival Commission, World Commission on Protected Areas, IUCN Council, and the IUCN World Conservation Congress.

Held once every four years, the IUCN World Conservation Congress (WCC) brings together several thousand leaders and decision-makers from government, conservation and other NGOs, civil society, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, business, UN agencies, Intergovernmental organisations, and academia, to influence the direction of conservation and global sustainable development for the next four years and to improve how we manage our natural environment for human, social and economic development. WCS is playing a major role in organising content for the WCC including keynote talks, workshops, and panel discussions, as well as promoting the adoption of key motions during the Members’ Assembly. WCS EU is also a member of IUCN and is based at the IUCN European Regional Office in Brussels.
